Summer is a great time to encourage reading. My daughter is so into chapter books now, I was so happy when Harper Collins approached me and offered to send her some book samples for summer reading.

Most of the books received have fall release dates so we were really excited to read them before anyone else!

We received:

The Unlikely Story of a Pig in the City

Out October 3, 2017

Synopsis:

A little pig in a big city leads to lots of trouble!

Josie Shilling’s family is too big, their cramped city house is too small, and she feels like no one’s ever on her side. Then, on Thanksgiving Day, her older brother, Tom, brings home a pink, squirmy bundle wrapped in an old football jersey—a piglet he rescued from a nearby farm. Her name is Hamlet.

The minute Josie holds Hamlet, she feels an instant connection. But there’s no room for Hamlet in the crowded Shilling household. And whoever heard of keeping a pig in the city? So it’s up to Josie to find her a forever home.

The Unlikely Story of a Pig in the City is a heartwarming tale of family, belonging, and growing bigger when you’ve always felt small.

The Crims

Available now

Synopsis:

The Crim family is full of notorious criminals. Notoriously inept, that is. Uncle Knuckles once tried to steal a carnival. Great-Uncle Bernard held himself hostage by accident. Aunt Drusilla died slipping on a banana peel. But Imogen is different. She was born with a skill for scandal. A knack for the nefarious. A mastery of misdemeanors.

Despite her natural talent for all things unlawful, Imogen got out of the family business years ago. But when the rest of the Crims are accused of pulling off a major heist—which seems doubtful, to say the least—Imogen is forced to step in to clear their names. Because only a truly skilled criminal can prove the bumbling family’s innocence….

Max Tilt: Fire the Depths

Out October 3, 2017

Synopsis:

When thirteen-year-old Max Tilt happens upon his great-great-great-grandfather Jules Verne’s unfinished, unpublished manuscript, The Lost Treasures, he doesn’t realize that he’s found the answers to all his problems. And Max has a lot of problems—his mother is sick, his father is out of work, and his home is about to be foreclosed on. But when Max and his cousin Alex discover that Verne’s last work reveals everything he wrote was fact, not fiction, they realize that the book holds the key to something incredibly valuable. A treasure that can save his house—and maybe his entire family.

But Max and Alex aren’t the only ones who know about Verne’s clues. Spencer Niemend, a strange skunk-haired man who has spent his life researching Verne’s works, is bent on reshaping the world with the hidden treasure. To find it first, Max and Alex must go on an adventure that’ll take them from the broken remains of an underwater city to the very jaws of a giant squid to the edges of a whirlpool from which no one has ever emerged alive.

This is the first book in a new hair-raising, edge-of-your-seat adventure series from master storyteller and New York Times bestselling author Peter Lerangis.

  5. my granddaughter would love the Unlikely Story of a Pig in the City. She loves pigs….strange but true….she collects pigs in every way shape and form…..so a pig book would be right up her alley!!

  7. The Unlikely Story of a Pig in the City would be her favorite as she would love to have a large pet in the city.

  8. I think my son would love The Crims because he likes mystery and trying to solve it before getting to the end. A lot of them I do catch him reading the last few chapters first though.

  9. Mr. Gedrick and Me would be my guess as the book my younger girl would love as she is fond of books about human relationships and struggles. My son would like Mutant Bunny Island as that is his kind of humour and my eldest girl would love the adventure of Max Tilt. My eldest is 13 and has observed that tween books are better than most teen books as they are not dark or full of sexual themes.
